Who we are
Understanding a child’s holistic development, as well as the vision and values of the kindergarten, we strive for the wellbeing of each and every individual in the kindergarten. We are making sure that everyone is seen, heard and respected.
Our vision is the quality of life and wellbeing of the children and staff. The vision is closely intertwined with the setting up of an open learning environment, a place where the needs and expectations of everyone are emphasised. Throughout the past decade, we have developed a unique approach named Project Work with a Puppet (PWP), which conveys our vision. This is a process-based, planned, implemented and evaluated kindergarten curriculum, which is designed in such a way that children and educators can co-create it in collaboration. It represents the annual project of the entire kindergarten within which the children’s play and learning take place in different learning environments that ingeniously intertwine and offer various possibilities for creation, inquiry, discovery, reflection and analysis. Educators possess additional knowledge of the so-called Pedagogical Puppeteer, which they use for planning and designing the activities. They use a pedagogical puppet that motivates the children and adults, encouraging project-based and innovative learning.
The Trnovo Kindergarten is an innovative kindergarten, known for its originality.
The pedagogical learning play with a puppet, the active, open and laboratory-like learning environment and the desire to help the puppet solve its problem enable the children to upgrade their knowledge with real experience, observation and experiments. Together they discover, inquire and test new and different solutions. They intertwine their real and imaginary worlds and face various challenges that are meaningful and important for them.
Independently or in interaction with their peers, they test, strengthen and realize their capabilities, wishes and needs. In that way, the children develop their personality, imagination, creative mind, talents and potentials. They grow physically, develop mentally and become increasingly competent and responsible. Gradually, they understand themselves and the world around them. They get different insights and experience and, in their activity and creativity, they can contribute to the following principles: belonging, being part of something and creating the world in co-existence.
We are pleased that our research work, knowledge and expertise, as well as our effort and energy, are well embraced, especially by our children and their parents. Moreover, students from different schools and faculties, as well as other educators (from kindergartens, schools and universities) and business persons from Slovenia and abroad are keen to visit our kindergarten. Our tasks and objectives, which we will pursue in the future, are the dissemination of our good practice, practising up-to-date concepts for developing creativity and innovation, and dealing with energy, learning principles and assessment mechanisms.
The three physically separated buildings are located in the very centre of the Trnovo district and represent the Trnovo Kindergarten. Regardless of the three locations, we function as one unit. Together we play, learn and co-create our work and life in the kindergarten. The perfect position of our kindergarten enables us to carry out various activities, visit the city centre and become acquainted with different institutions.
The three units:
- The administration, central kitchen and 9 groups of children from 2 to 6 years of age are located at Kolezijska 11.
- The units at Karunova 16 a and Karunova 16 b are located next to the Kolezijska.
- Two groups of children from 1 to 2 years of age are located in two apartments at Trnovski pristan 12.

The opening hours are adjusted to the needs of parents and in consensus with the funder, the city municipality of Ljubljana.
In summer and during the holidays, we organize our work according to the number of children following the principle of economy and the parents’ needs.
